Just yesterday, our prime minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, became the first person in Malaysia to receive the Comirnaty (Pfizer-BioNTech) Covid-19 vaccine.
Since then, many have taken to social media to point out that the syringe used in his vaccination appeared to be in different colours, starting conspiracy theories.
According to Berita Harian, the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) has since explained why the initial needle used to extract the vaccine from the vile is blue, while the needle used to inject Tan Sri Muhyiddin was orange-red.
They shared that the blue needle heads are used to extract the vaccine fluid as they are bigger, to ensure a smoother intake.
“The size of the red or orange needle is smaller, and is used for inoculation to ensure less pain and bruising. In addition, the use of different needles is necessary to prevent cross-contamination between patients,” they added.
They also emphasised the importance of not changing the content of the vaccine that is extracted from the vile and given to the patient.
Upon launching the National COVID-19 Immunsation Programme, Malaysia aims to achieve herd immunity with the vaccination of at least 80 per cent of the country’s adults.
