Many often look forward to Chinese New Year for the time spent with family, great food, and of course, the steady stream of ang pows! Most of us are grateful to even be given ang pows this year, especially due to the restrictions placed on house visitations and the deteriorating economic situation. Unfortunately, it seems as though not everybody has this same spirit of gratitude.

A Taiwanese man recently took to a Chinese forum called “Bagua Board” to share how his relatives came over on the night before Chinese New Year and he presented their children with ang pows amounting to 600 yuan (RM80) each.

He emphasised that he did not know these relatives very well but they would visit occasionally for festivities. However, instead of responding with thankfulness, some of these children counted the money in front of all their relatives and told the man to his face that it was “too little!”

“Oh, only 600 yuan (RM80)? All my aunts gave about 1,200 yuan (RM160),” said one of the children, as reported by See Hua Daily.

The man shared that he only earns an income of 22,000 yuan (RM2,900) hence he thought 600 yuan (RM80) was a decent enough allocation for his relatives’ children. Heartbroken and embarrassed, he took to the forum to ask netizens how they would respond in such a situation. The post garnered various hilarious responses from netizens. Here were the best ones:

• “Is it too little? You can pay me back and you’ll get nothing next year!”
• “The economic downturn is bad this year. I will give more next year!” (just give them the same 600 yuan).
• “I actually don’t earn that much. Ask your parents for more!”

Others advised the man to use the opportunity to educate the children and teach them to be content with what is given to them.

Honestly, an RM80 ang pow is more than enough for us! What do you guys think of this?
