Our elderly parents and grandparents would do anything for us, including working harder than others to provide for us despite their old age.

One grandmother in Penang travels six hours a day to sell salted fish, so that she can help provide for her grandchild’s college fees.

Machang Bubuk assemblyman, Lee Khai Loon took to his Facebook page to showcase the elderly lady’s daily struggles, adding that he had bought her a fridge so that she can keep her stock of salted fish fresh.

He wrote, “A journalist photographer, Aizuddin Saad, told me about an aunty, 61-year-old Kak Murugamah, who cycles for 6km and takes a bus from Nibong Tebal to Air Itam on the island, everyday to sell salted fish. Every day, Kak Murugamah takes six hours to commute from her home to the market and back.”

It turns out that she didn’t have a freezer to keep her stock of salted fish in, so when she buys a batch of salted fish, she had to sell it immediately so that it wouldn’t spoil.

“What impressed me was that, at the age of 61, she lives alone. She is still capable of working hard and not inconveniencing others. She wakes up early at 5.30am to make her three hour journey to trade at the morning market,” he explained.

Though, what she lacks in reading and writing skills, she makes up for in hard work to the best of her capabilities.

“My goal is to help her, so that she can be encouraged to work harder towards a better life. She told me that she wants to help her grandchild through college with her earnings. Hopefully, Kak Murugamah’s business will grow and succeed,” he shared.
