Needless to say, double standards in Malaysia are apparent as authoritative figures and celebrities have breached SOPs with action only taken against them after public backlash.
Yet, as these double standards are being brought to light, there are still public figures who are blatantly breaching SOPs.
For instance, as according to BERNAMA, Senior Minister cum International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali recently took a trip to to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to lead a trade and investment mission. He took off for his trip on 26 April and returned on 4 May, 2021.
Also, on 29 April, the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) shared a list of countries that reported the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variant, with the UAE included in the list.
They also shared that those returning from the countries mentioned in the list must undergo a 14-day quarantine period.
Hence, if Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin returned to Malaysia on 4 May, his quarantine period would have been until 17 May.
Yet, just yesterday, 10 May, he visited the Putrajaya District Police Headquarters (IPD) to hand over donations to the Putrajaya IPD Police Club.
He wrote, “Visited the Putrajaya IPD to meet the Putrajaya District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Fadzil Ali to hand over donations to the Putrajaya IPD Police Club as a result of their application to the JPM ICU.”
“I even managed to give words of encouragement to the members and frontliners who are diligent enough to ensure the safety and order of the people through the SOPs set by the government. Hopefully, we can hit the contagion curve of this pandemic soon,” he added.
But, Malaysians were not having it.
This comment goes, “RIP to the integrity of the Royal Malaysia Police. He didn’t quarantine himself after coming back from overseas and he can visit the police and not have action taken against him.”
This comment reads, “Just the other day they said UAE was in the list of countries with the Variant of Concern (VOC) that requires 14-day quarantine. How many days did you quarantine yourself? Are ministers Covid-proof?”
This comment says, “This is what makes the people angry, you make the rules but you flout them. When did you come back from overseas? How long did you quarantine yourself for? What is this? What is this nonsense.”
It’s truly saddening to see the people whom we look to for leadership flouting the SOPs while they punish regular folks for more minor mistakes.
We genuinely hope that the appropriate action will be taken against the minister.
