With so many livelihoods affected by the pandemic, the price of a pack of sanitary pads can be costly for underprivileged women, especially if they don’t have the means to purchase this essential item on their own.

Therefore, giving out free sanitary pads is definitely a game-changer. Grocery stores owned by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) came up with an initiative to provide free sanitary pads to those who can’t afford them.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri took to his official Twitter account to say, “Period poverty is a global issue and affects the urban poor in Malaysia. As a start, @maiwphq store and YADIMart @YadimOfficial will provide free sanitary pads. Efforts and awareness campaigns need to be intensified in the community.”

Many women in poor urban areas struggle to get by their menstruation periods and resort to using whatever absorbent material they can afford. This could lead to infections or some serious health issues among them, as reported by New Straits Times.

He also wrote, “This is definitely a continuous effort because it is closely related to various roots of the problem. The federal-level religious agencies under my responsibility will continue to support this genuine effort. Thank you, zakat payers and infaq donors!”

The free sanitary pads can be found on the Gerobok Rezeki shelves at any MAIWP store as well as the food bank at the YADIMart!
