Nine wild monkeys were found dead in Paya Terubong, Penang after they were believed to have been poisoned.
According to North East District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, a police report was made by security guards on duty at a nearby housing estate, reported Harian Metro.
A video posted on social media shows one of the monkeys shaking uncontrollably while another video shows several other monkeys lying motionless on the ground, some in their last breath.
“The security guard made a report after it was discovered that the nine wild monkeys were suspected to have been poisoned in front of the apartment in Grand View,” Soffian Santong said.
“The case has been referred to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) for further investigation.”
The security guard involved said that he found out about the incident from a woman who regularly fed animals in the area. He said the woman contacted him and claimed to have found a piece of biscuit believed to contain poison in the monkey’s mouth and rushed to the location to investigate the situation.
“I have lived here for 40 years, I have never heard a complaint about the monkeys disturbing the residents. This act is very cruel and stern action must be taken against the perpetrators,” he said.
