Globally, over 820 million people struggle with hunger every day. In Malaysia alone, pre-pandemic numbers show that we throw away 3,000 tonnes of edible food each day, which is enough to provide 10 million meals.
These numbers, however, is not improving. Taking to social media, @PenangKini shared images of just how wasteful we are, when images of donated food made its way to the dumps, probably thrown out by ungrateful Malaysians.
“It is easy to show a little gratitude at the assistance given. There are many others out there who struggle for a meal, yet there are still those who remain ungrateful.”
“It saddens our hears seeing goods being thrown out like this.”
Penangites were clearly unhappy with what they saw. Garnering over 6.9k likes and 953 shares, here is what they had to say.
“This attitude grinds our gears. If you don’t want it , give it to someone else.”
Another netizen suggested that all food items should be made available via food banks.
“If you need food, just come and get it. If not, please don’t take it. There is no point wasting it.”
Let’s hope that as Malaysians, we show a little more gratitude with the stuff we have received out of the kindness of others. Let’s stop this sickening practice now!
