A total of 468 suicide cases were recorded in Malaysia from January to May 2021, according to PDRM.

In a statement released on their official Facebook page, statistics show that 609 suicide cases were recorded in 2019 while 631 cases were recorded in 2020. On average, two suicide cases were recorded every day between 2019 to May 2021.

From 2019 to May 2021, these suicide cases involved a total of 281 men and 1,427 women. Most of the victims involved are aged 15 to 18 which totals 872 people, while victims aged 19 to 40 total 668 people.

Statistics also show that Johor recorded the highest cases in 2019 and 2020 with a total of 101 cases. In 2021 however, between January to May, Selangor recorded the highest number of suicide cases with a total of 117 cases in just five months.

Investigations have found that there are three main causes of the suicides recorded, namely family problems, emotional problems and financial problems.

It also revealed that the most common suicide methods based on statistics are hanging (75.1%), jumping from buildings (13.6%) and consuming poison (5.7%).

“Based on the trend of suicide incidents, all responsible parties, especially the society, should play an important role in curbing these symptoms,” the statement said.

“Individuals who experience problems in finance, health, emotional stress, depression, family issues and so on should be given help and support from family and close friends.”

“The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) calls on individuals who are experiencing problems and stress as stated above to get help and support from family members, close friends and also from parties that provide counselling services.”
