While the Covid-19 pandemic is raging on, many students are getting left behind with online classes, especially underprivileged students who do not have the proper tools to attend these classes.
One kind parent and school PIBG member, Renee Siaw, decided to help the students at the SK(L) MBS on Jalan Hang Jebat by sourcing out 60 devices, both new and used, to be distributed to the students who have missed out on their classes.
Parents could not afford gadgets for online class
Renee spoke to WORLD OF BUZZ about how they had only recently found out that the parents could not afford the necessary gadgets for their kids to attend online classes, more than a year after the initial MCO.
“I guess many [of them] thought that the situation was just a temporary one. We just want to move forward now and help them get back to their classes as soon as possible. We found out from a teacher that these students had never attended a single class, and some parents cannot be contacted, they dropped off the radar,”
“I spoke to our PIBG to get more connected to these parents who might probably feel more comfortable speaking about their problems to us than to the teachers, as we are parents too,” Renee said.
She also said she tried to apply for governmental help for each of the children and their families but many were apparently ineligible.
“I kept thinking of how these parents who can’t even afford food on their table would be bothered about getting their children to study online,”
“My children themselves are trapped together with these kids, who are all going to be named Children of the Lost Years. But, the difference between my own kids is that I had the extra money to give them tuition the moment the pandemic started, until today, so that they will not miss out on any of their studies,” Renee added.
Now, Renee is determined in ensuring these underprivileged kids get their education back on track, but, she needs your help!
“We can’t help in every way, but we chose to help a little, we chose to help the children. We hope others who can afford the time and money will also help,” she urged.
They need 60 devices for the students!
If you have a new or used fully functional smartphone, tablet or laptop that can operate Google Meet and you are no longer using it, you can contact Renee at +6016-717 1812 and donate these devices for the children.
Renee added that if they end up collecting more devices than they require at SK(L) MBS, they will be providing them to other schools in need.
Education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial standing.
