The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has just appointed Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the 9th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
This comes after Agong’s meeting with the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara at 2.30pm today. Yesterday (19 August), the Agong also met with the 114 Members of Parliament (MP) mostly from UMNO/BN who pledged their support for Ismail Sabri as the next Prime Minister.
In a statement released by Istana Negara’s official Facebook page, the Agong said that from the declaration letters, a total of 114 Members of the House of Representatives have declared their support for Ismail Sabri with a sufficient majority to form the Government.

Ismail Sabri will be sworn in as the 9th Prime Minister of Malaysia at 2.30pm tomorrow (21 August) at Istana Negara.
“His Majesty expressed his view that with the appointment of the Prime Minister, the Government must continue its efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic immediately for the benefit and security of the people and the well-being of the country which is greatly affected by the crisis and the threat of this pandemic.”
“His Majesty expressed the hope that with the appointment of the new Prime Minister, the political crisis can be ended immediately and all Members of the House of Representatives can set aside the political agenda with unity and agree to work for Covid-19 in the interest of the people and the country.”
“His Majesty reiterated the view that the people should not be burdened with endless political turmoil at a time when the country is struggling with health issues and economic depression due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Members of the Dewan Rakyat are also reminded to show solidarity by giving priority, high commitment and the best service to the people.”
