The heatwave brings an abundance of durian and when there is durian, there’s also mangosteen! As true Malaysians, we love eating the juicy sweet flesh of mangosteens along with our durians. However, one hurdle that stands between us and the succulent white flesh of the mangosteen is breaking through the vibrant purple skin of the mangosteens. It is often hard to break it in one try as one may end up blistering the fruit’s flesh inside.
But with this new hack, it seems like that will no longer be the case! A Malaysian named @pojanahayat took to TikTok to share with us the easiest way to open mangosteen.

In the video, he first showed all the ways that people normally open their mangosteens, from squeezing the fruit between their palms to break it open to knocking it on the table.
Squeezing the mangosteen may be an effective method to break the skin of the fruit, but the TikTok user showed how it also squeezes the flesh of the fruit and stains your hands.
@pojanahayat then picks up one mangosteen and says,
“This is how orang kampung opens a mangosteen.”
He continues to say that it is normal for people to press around the fruit, but it is not the right way. He then demonstrates how you should look for the part of the fruit’s green stem that’s sticking out from what looks like a hat of the mangosteen.
He then places his thumb behind the stem and presses on the fruit and it cleanly breaks open in the middle showing off its white soft flesh.
He then continues to peel off the skin of the mangosteen and drops the whole flesh in his mouth.
Since being posted, the TikTok video has amassed over 200k likes and more than 7,000 shares at the time of writing. Malaysians took to the comment section of the video to express their regret and shock that they’ve been peeling mangosteens the wrong way this whole time!
Among the comments, one netizen said, “17 years of my life and only now I know how to open mangosteen properly”. Another netizen jokingly quipped, “why are you showing this only now, the mangosteen at home has finished?”
Some shared other unconventional ways they have attempted to peel it open but failed, “(I) usually use knife, now I know it can be opened just like that.” Another one that said, “I use my teeth to open it but it tastes bitter then”. Some were even amused, “This is the first time I see someone opening mangosteen fruit so perfectly!”
