SG Police Sergeant Charged For Seeking Relationship With Woman In Exchange For Help With Case

A 25-year-old police sergeant in Singapore was charged for allegedly seeking a romantic relationship with a woman in exchange for helping her with her case last Thursday (2 September 2021). As reported by Yahoo! News, the police sergeant, Sean Teo was charged under the Computer Misuse Act, Official Secrets Act and Prevention of Corruption Act for his illegal advances.

Teo allegedly misused a Singapore Police Force (SPF) computer system on 2 November 2019 where he accessed data of individuals who were arrested in a police operation via an incident report. Furthermore, on 8 December 2019, Teo allegedly had in his possession a photograph relating to the 2 November police operation and sent the photo to the woman while at a playground along Jurong West Street 61.

Within the same month, Teo also allegedly solicited gratification in the form of a romantic relationship with the same woman in exchange for assisting in her case with the Central Narcotics Bureau. However, the woman rejected Teo’s request.

The Singaporean police sergeant has since been charged for:

  • Accessing data regarding to individuals arrested in the Singapore Police Force system without authority
  • Sending a photo he received from a police operation to the woman he wanted a relationship with
  • Soliciting a relationship with her in exchange for helping her with her Central Narcotics Bureau case.

For his alleged offences, Teo may face imprisonment up to five years or/and a RM300,000 fine if convicted of a corruption offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Moreover, he also faces imprisonment up to 2 years or/and a RM15,000 fine if convicted of the offence under the Computer Misuse Act. If convicted of an offence under the Official Secrets Act, he can be jailed up to two years and fined up to RM6,000.
