MP Says Since TIMAH Is A Common Malay Name, Drinking The Whiskey Is Like “Drinking Malay Women”

Just last week, PAS raised their concerns on TIMAH whiskey as they were felt that the branding may cause confusion and controversy among Muslims.

Today (28 October), the issue of TIMAH whiskey was once again brought up in Parliament by Rusnah Aluai, Tangga Batu’s MP who stated the name is really confusing the people.

“Why not a picture of Captain Speedy with a hat instead,” she questioned while highlighting the image of Captain Speedy wearing a kopiah (skullcap) which may appear as a religious man.

She also wondered why TIMAH became the final branding instead of another name such as The Mines. But what she really highlighted was how the name of the whiskey may pose a bad perception towards the female as the name is a common Malay name.

“We have Kak Timah, Mak Timah, Mak Cik Timah. When we drink the whiskey, it’s as if we’re drinking Malay women.”

Following the statement made, Muar’s MP and the co-founder of MUDA, Syed Saddiq immediately took to his Twitter and responded to the situation.

In the meantime, as the branding has stirred up more controversies over time, the company that manufactures TIMAH whiskey, Winepak Corporation has agreed to consider changing the name and image on the label, as reported by The Straits Time. They have asked for one week to discuss with the stakeholders and the board of directors for the possible changes.
