Early last year, the Kuantan Art Street was vandalised causing the Kuantan City Council to install CCTV cameras to prevent further cases of vandalism.
Now, it appears that vandals might have struck again.
The Kuantan City Council took to their Facebook page to showcase pictures of newly damaged street art.
They wrote, “Disappointed and saddened to see that vandalism culture still lingers in this city without a full-stop. It is as though the efforts to beautify and liven up (the town) is not appreciated by visitors and building owners.”
“Murals and street art elsewhere have long existed and still remain beautiful, but in Kuantan?”
While many netizens also believe that the damage is the work of vandals…
“I didn’t expect that people like this are still around.”
“Before this, they said that Kuantan didn’t have any attractions. When there are (attractions), they are damaged. How can we progress? The mentality needs to change. Embarrassing.”
“It’s sad that there are people who do not know how to be grateful. It is something that should be taken care of, not destroyed.”
…some believe that there are other factors involved
“Use better quality paint. The paint that’s peeling off, I don’t think that’s vandalism. The chair and table that are broken, could have been because of the constant rain and heat.”
Though, it is unsure as to what the real cause is, we need to ensure that such initiatives that showcase the gorgeous artwork of local artists be protected and championed.
We genuinely hope that the proper authorities get to the bottom of this and come up with a long-term solution.
