Day after day, scammers continuously come up with “bright ideas” to trick their victims and as of now, it looks like there is no end to these cons.
Yesterday (15 March), a Facebook page Pengutip Besi Burok has shared an incident of a man who nearly got conned by a few men who claimed that the bank sent them to tow his car. The incident took place when the man stopped for fuel in BHP Petrol Station near Bentong toll heading to Karak where he was stopped by 2 men in a Waja.
He was told that he has unpaid tickets and they were there to repossess his car.
“This is an insult as my car is more than 20-year old. It’s obviously a scam to trick an innocent bald guy,” he stressed.
He then asked for the repossession letter to check the issuing bank but the men could not produce the letter. However, they said that his plate number was in the system on their laptop, which they kindly showed the man.
The 2 men were not alone. There were 2 others seated in the Waja, a driver and a passenger who held the laptop and showed him the excel sheet which contained plate numbers of multiple vehicles, including his.
“But there are no details of the car, such as the manufacturing year, CC, issuing bank, the amount of debt. Just the plate number and looked like it was just typed a few minutes back.”
He then told the men to bring along the letter from the bank and not to just simply confront people. He managed to take some pictures of the men while conversing with them. Although he was asked to delete the pictures, he told them the pictures are for his safekeeping before he drove away.
He managed to inform his friends about it in case anything happens in the future. He also reminded people what to do if they ever encounter a situation like this.
- Remain calm.
- Do not hand over your car or your money immediately, even if they provoke you.
- Ask for a repossession letter from the issuing bank and make sure it’s the bank where you pay your loan.
- Call the police immediately if you’re scared.
