MACC: No Elements of Corruption & Malpractice Found in The Building of RM50K Wooden Jetty

A recently-completed wooden jetty in Sarawak that costs RM50,000 has raised questions among the people, especially in terms of its quality. In the meantime, some people have also wondered if corruption is involved in the building of the jetty given the cost.

Yesterday (12 April), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) cleared the air and revealed that they found no elements of corruption or malpractice in the building of the wooden jetty in Kampung Mutap, Miri.

The Borneo Post reported that investigations had been carried out for the project following the allegations of high costs by the people.

“Assessment done by experts have confirmed that the wood used for the jetty was indeed belian timber, as stated by JKR Sarawak in its statement earlier,” a source said.

Meanwhile, MACC Senior Director of Investigation Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the matter when contacted by BERNAMA but declined to comment further.

In another report, Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak secretary Alan Ling said earlier that MACC is the rightful body to step in and conduct an investigation as the project had turned into a national issue.

“The explanation provided by JKR Sarawak was not enough to fulfil the people’s expectation concerning public funds and interests,” Alan explained.

The project was widely criticised by netizens after photos of the completed wooden jetty were uploaded onto the JKR Sarawak corporate communication Facebook page.

Following the criticisms, JKR Sarawak released a media statement and explained the whole situation, as well as the reasoning behind the cost of the wooden jetty.

As MACC has confirmed that no elements of corruption were involved, do you think the relevant parties could’ve built a better jetty with the allocated budget?
