Nagaenthran’s Final Request, Minutes Before Execution, Was To Hold His Family’s Hands

Both Malaysians and Singaporeans alike were heartbroken upon hearing the news that the intellectually disabled Malaysian, Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, had been executed this morning (27 April), after being on death row for more than a decade for trafficking 42.72 grams of heroin into Singapore.

Now, more saddening details are coming into light.

Based on a report by Tamil Guardian, Nagaenthran’s final request to the court, just mere minutes before he was executed, was to hold his family’s hands one last time.

Following the court’s decision, Nagaenthran requested via a translator to “spend some time with my family members” after a final stay of execution was dismissed.

“I’m placing this request so I can hold my family members’ hands. Here in court, Your Honour, I would like to hold my family members’ hands, not in prison. May I please have permission to hold their hands here?”

Approving the request, the court had allowed Nagaenthran to hold his family’s hands one last time through a slit in the glass screen in the courtroom.

His family members had arrived from Malaysia to file a final stay of execution, which the court had dismissed as “there must come a time when the last word of the court is the last word“.

Our sincerest condolences to Nagenthran’s family and loved ones.
