New York City Removes The City’s Last Ever Payphone

As technology advances, many old gadgets are slowly disappearing from sight. Gadgets like home telephones, televisions, and radio players are no longer as popular since we can already do most things on our phones or computers. In Malaysia, most young people have probably forgotten or do not know anything about payphones.

Back then when making a call was not that convenient, payphones were available in public outdoor areas for people to make calls by inserting coins.

Recently, New York City (NYC) has officially said goodbye to the city’s last ever payphone. In a Tiktok video posted by the official Times Square NYC account, the last payphone in NYC was removed on 24 May 2022.

The TikTok video has garnered 11.9 million views and 2.3million likes, with many bidding farewells and feeling emotional about the end of the payphone era.

In Malaysia, there is no official data on how many payphones are left. However, in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, there are still public telephone booths that have not been removed, although the payphone in the booth is no longer usable.
