Former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, has been convicted by the jury for the murder of George Floyd. The 45-year-old man was found guilty on all three charges — second-degree and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter reported Financial Times.

The second-degree murder charge carries a prison sentence of up to 40 years. Chauvin’s conviction is a first in Minnesota state history where a white police officer has been held accountable for killing a black man.

Keith Ellison, the Minnesota attorney-general who led the prosecution said the verdict today isn’t about justice, it’s about accountability.

“Justice implies true restoration. But it is accountability, which is the first step towards justice.”

The murder of George Floyd fuelled the Black Lives Matter protest all across the world against racial injustice. Chauvin knelt on the late George Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes while arresting him for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill.

Philonise Floyd, George Floyd’s brother said that he feels relieved that he finally has the opportunity to get some sleep. “A lot of days that I prayed, and I hoped and I was speaking everything into existence. I said, ‘I have faith that he will be convicted,” he said.
