Malaysia has yet to recover fully from the third wave of Covid-19, but we are already seeing an upward trend of cases during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).
Just yesterday (14 April), there was a spike in daily cases at 1,889, and the number could get higher looking at how the infectivity rate is rising by the day.
According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), the infectivity rate now stands at 1.14, a huge jump from the previous days, indicating another wave of cases in the days and weeks to come.
The infectivity rate is measured using the R0 (pronounced R-naught) value. For example, an infectivity rate of 1.5 means that one infected person is able to spread the virus to 1.5 other people.
With the R0 now at 1.14, the infectivity rate is now higher that it was on 23 January 2021 when cases reached over 4,200 cases with an infectivity rate of 1.08.
On 13 April, Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, gave a grave announcement that Malaysia is at risk of a fourth wave based on the risk assessment done by the Ministry of Health over the past 14 days.
We don’t know what lies ahead of us, but what we can do is to avoid going out unnecessarily for the time being and to adhere to the SOPs until the infectivity rate lowers.
