Malaysia has much to cheer for today, as national powerlifting champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin powered through and gifted Malaysia its first gold medal of the Tokyo Paralympics in the men’s 72-kilogramme category!
The 22-year-old Sarawakian is a main medal contender for the event, after breaking the world record in the same event at the 11th Fazza Dubai 2021 Para Powerlifting World Cup in UAE by lifting 230kg and winning gold at the event.
With many Malaysians following his journey to win gold at the Paralympics, here is a video of Bonnie in action, as tweeted by @SyedSaddiq.
In his Paralympic debut, Bonnie lifted 228 kg, setting a Paralympic record, beating Attia Mahmoud (Egypt) and Yule Micky, to win gold.
Tweeting, “Malaysia has its first gold at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020”, netizens express their gratitude to Bonnie’s performance at the games.
Though he did not lift his world record weight of 230kg, he got pretty close to it by lifting 228kg, bettering his nearest competitor, who lifted 191kg in the event.
Let’s hope that other athletes performing today will give their utmost best and make the country proud of their achievements.
