M’sian Housewife Fined RM12,000 After Spreading Fake News That Covid-19 Vaccines Are “Dangerous”

Vaccines may not prevent one from contracting Covid-19 but they are effective in preventing hospitalisation and death. However, many still choose not to take it and prefer to listen to unverifiable information that is spread on social media platforms.

Recently, a 46-year-old housewife has been fined after she spread a video with the title: “Siapa Yang dah daftar! Lelaki ini Bongkar Bahayanya V*ksin Covid-19?” which translates to,

“Those who have registered! This man reveals the dangers of the Covid-19 vaccine?”

She had uploaded the video on her Facebook account back on 25 May. The post was later discovered by the Ministry of Health (KKM) on 3 June, reported Sinar Harian.

In court, she was said to have spread misinformation via the video with the intention of causing public turmoil.

“The misconduct was done in line with the time when the government was fighting hard to curb Covid-19 infections via the National Immunisation Programme.”

The housewife pleaded guilty to the spread of misinformation and the judge gave an RM12,000 fine. If she fails to pay the amount required, she will be facing jail time for a total of six months.

An infodemic is as harmful to society as a pandemic. When you receive any messages on the pandemic or the vaccines, be sure to double-check them with reputable sources before spreading the information.
