The monsoon season is expected to begin in November and is forecasted to last until March 2022. However, episodes of heavy rain have already started, causing massive flooding in several states in the country.
One of the worst-hit states is Melaka, where heavy rain poured for four hours, resulting in hundreds of people affected by the flood.
According to BERNAMA, the number of flood victims recorded on Thursday morning (21 October) at 8am was 590 individuals from 155 families. Unfortunately, the number increases later in the day at 4pm to 932 individuals from 249 families.
Melaka State APM director Lt Colonel Cuthbert John Martin Qudra said the number of temporary evacuation centers (PPS) in the three districts in the state also increased to 12 in the evening compared to 10 in the morning.
He added that 144 victims from 45 affected families in Alor Gajah were placed in three PPS – SK Durian Tunggal, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Sin Wah and SK Telok Berembang.
A total of 267 victims from 70 affected families in the Jasin district were placed in three PPS as well, namely SMK Seri Bemban, SK Tehel and SJKC Shuh Yen.
“In Melaka Tengah, a total of 521 victims from 134 families were placed in six PPS, namely SMK Tun Mutahir, SK Batu Berendam 2, SK Krubong, SK Taman Merdeka, SK Ayer Molek and SMK Bukit Katil,” he said.
Kosmo reported that 50 settlements have been affected with 26 of them involving areas in Central Melaka, 14 in Alor Gajah and 10 in Jasin.
