Months ago, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced that we were expected to enter the endemic phase by late October. However, that did not happen and in fact, it seems to be something that can only be achieved in the distant future.
“The transition into endemicity would take a long, long time.”
Khairy made it clear that to reach the phase of living with the notorious virus without overwhelming the health care system is not going to be a walk in the park, as reported by Code Blue.
“If any countries think they can declare victory anytime soon, they’re sorely mistaken,” he added.
Despite the reassurance that total lockdown will not happen, Khairy stated that social restriction will possibly make a comeback should the Covid-19 cases in our country overrun the hospitals, which will lead to another collapse in the healthcare system. To him, the greatest nightmare for a health minister is hospital capacity, especially critical care capacity, ICU (intensive care unit) capacity, according to The Edge Markets.
“Once it breaches a certain point, red flags will be raised and that’s when we need to put a pause on some social activities.”
Astro Awani also reported that Khairy had mentioned the virus is stubborn and it is unlikely to go anywhere, but we have to move forward by reopening the country and of course, with safety measurements taken into consideration.

Most of all, he urged the people to get their booster shots once they have received the appointment, especially those above 40 years old and individuals with comorbidities. He also reminded the people to take whatever is offered as it will not only help in terms of ensuring better coverage but also help others by lowering the risk of transmissions.
