Students & Teachers Rescued After Being Trapped In Serdang School Due To Flash Flood

The weather these few weeks has really been going back and forth between hot and humid days with strong sun or gloomy, windy days and continuous rain.

In the afternoon of 1 November, strong winds and stormy clouds filled the skies of KL and Selangor. Shortly after, a heavy downpour started and it rained continuously which caused water to rise in some places. One such place is a primary school in Serdang named SK Sri Serdang.

It has been reported by Berita Harian that the torrential downpour has caused flooding at the primary school. As the water rose rapidly, there were some students and teachers who were trapped in there. The Selangor Bomba director, Norazam Khamis has said that the flash floods started at about 7.45pm and there were a total of 32 people (18 teachers and 14 students) who were trapped in the school.

The children were prioritised and BOMBA personnel carried them one by one out of the school to a safe place where their parents can get them. At 9.30pm, the children were successfully evacuated and the water began to reside. The rescue operation ended at 10pm.

Other than that, the flash flood has also affected the commuter trains run by KTMB. However, after two hours, it was back to normal.

This is certainly a very concerning issue as schools are usually used as relief centres when natural disasters such as floods happen. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments.
