A baby elephant has died due to an infection after its trunk had to be amputated after it got stuck in a trap set by poachers in Indonesia. When the one-year-old calf was found caught in the trap by villages in the town of Aceh Jaya, it was left behind by its herd. The villagers brought the poor calf to a conservation agency to be treated.
As reported by BBC, the officials at the conservation agency tried their best to save the baby elephant’s life by amputating its trunk. Unfortunately after two days, the poor calf died due to an infection from its injuries. The head of the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency explained,
“We couldn’t save it because the injury was severe and infected. We did our best to help it.”
Due to the rapid deforestation in Borneo and Sumatra, the Sumatran elephant is a critically endangered species and their tusks fetch high prices on the illegal ivory market. The situation of endangered animals in this region is looking very grim. Hopefully, there’s a light at the end of this tunnel. If not, our future generation will not be able to experience the wonders of mother nature.
