JAKIM Donates To Tornado Victims in Ipoh Regardless of Race & Religion

Just when we thought the country can have a breath of relief after the disastrous flood, Malaysians were shocked by the news of tornado hitting some neighbourhoods in Ipoh during the weekend.

Following the aftermath of the disaster, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) has decided to contribute to the victims through donations from Tabung Musa’adah. An amount of RM300 and a meal box worth RM100 were donated to every tornado victim in Ipoh, regardless of race & religion.

The Minister of Religious Affairs, Idris Ahmad has also said that it is in line with the Islamic teachings that urge its people to help the needy ones.

“Regardless of race & religion, we have to help the people in need. That’s what the religion and the prophets have taught us,” he explained.

He also said that during the tough times, the prophets had also helped the Jews, which explains why it should be an example for all of us to lend a helping hand in this plural society without taking into account the background of the victims.

Yesterday (2 February), he was seen giving out donations to the victims of the tornado at a ceremony in Ipoh. He also expressed his gratitude to the NGOs and some people who personally reached out to help ease the burden of the victims. In total, an amount of RM61,500 and basic needs worth RM20,500 have been donated to the victims in Ipoh.

The tornado that struck Ipoh on Sunday (29 January) had destroyed some neighbourhoods, including Kampung Tawas and Taman Tasek Damai and approximately 219 houses were affected by the disaster.

We would like to thank JAKIM and anyone who has offered to help the victims during this tough time.
