Woman in China Complains That RM5,264 Angpow From BF’s Family is Too Little As They are “Quite Ok”

How many angpows did you collect this year? Since we’re still living in a pandemic, it is definitely less than the previous years but the most important thing is that we can spend time with our loved ones.

A woman in China has recently gone under fire on Weibo for complaining about an angpow that her boyfriend’s parents had given her.

The woman said that before Chinese New Year, she accompanied her boyfriend to go back to his hometown to visit his parents. It is the first time that she is meeting them.

During her stay there, she was given good, delicious food by his parents which she felt “wasn’t too bad” and gives her the impression that they are not “lacking money” or “stingy”.

When their stay was ending, his mother gave her an angpow that she later opened when she was in the car, heading back to the city.

“When I opened the red packet in the car, my impression of their family completely changed.”

The angpow contained 8,000 RMB (RM5,264) and she was not happy with it. If we received that amount we would be jumping with joy.

“I felt insulted and disrespected. Their finances are not bad, so are they blatantly disregarding me by giving so little angpow?”

In order to get an answer, she talked to her best friend who said that the amount is okay and she should be appreciative.

But the woman still cannot let it go and said,

“If they are already so stingy on the first Chinese New Year, then what about the future?”

The netizens on Weibo were mind-boggled after they read her post and commented sarcastic remarks.

“Let me ask you a question, will you refund the 8,000 RMB if you ever break up?”

“This is the first time you’ve met them and they didn’t even transfer their house to you? They are definitely disregarding you, break up with him as fast as you can.”

“How much did your parents give him?”

Well, we believe that angpows are tokens from the heart and people shouldn’t feel so entitled to another person’s wealth.

Even if they are giving you an RM2 angpow, it is still something we should be thankful for and not complain about.

With how the pandemic has affected the job market, many people’s financial situation has been affected as well.

So, this Chinese New Year, we should be thankful for how we can celebrate the festivities surrounded (with social distancing) with our loved ones.
