Study: 59% Of M’sian Youth Fear That They’ll Never Afford To Buy A Home In Their Lifetime

Architects of Diversity (AOD), an NGO that aims to bridge communities and identity groups among youth in Malaysia recently conducted the Youth Aspiration Manifesto Survey which found a few rather depressing findings amongst Malaysian youth. AOD said the survey sought to uncover youth opinions on issues such as employment, housing, education, wealth distribution and others.

AOD shared that the survey was conducted on 3,089 youth between 18 and 30 years old from 22 February to 7 March 2022, with quota sampled according to statistics in the 2020 census by race, gender, age and state. As reported by Malaysiakini, the study found that 59% of youth in our country fear that they will never be able to afford to buy a home in their lifetime.

Furthermore, a whopping 90% of respondents also wants the government to develop more affordable housing in Malaysia. Keeping to the theme of housing, the survey also found that 75% of respondents want the government to set a ceiling price or cap on housing rentals.

Meanwhile, 52% of youth feared about future unemployment, concern strongly highlighted among bumiputera respondents. The fear of future unemployment sentiment was also felt more strongly by those from East Malaysia compared to others in the region.

87% of respondents also supported the government’s recent move to increase the national minimum wage. Moreover, 88% of respondents also called for employment protection of gig workers such as e-hailing and delivery riders.
