KL’s Padang Merbok Is Now Fenced Up & M’sians Are NOT Happy About It

Recently, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) installed an iron fence around Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur, as part of the maintenance of the field to ensure that it is always in the best condition.

Based on a report by Astro Awani, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah shared that the use of the field without control and a ordinary system had resulted in the area being damaged often and incurring high repair and upgrade costs.

“With the fence, I’m sure that the care of the field will be more perfect and controlled, and anyone can make a booking to use the field,” he explained.

“Even if people want to enter, we can manage it well, there will be a queue, if the field is damaged, we will close it for a while for repairs and maintenance before reopening, I think it will be more controlled and managed.”

But, many are not happy about this.

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh and Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil took to their respective Facebook pages in a joint effort to urge the authorities to take down the fence as Padang Merbok is the only place in the area for the general public to gather and relax.

Yeoh wrote, “Padang Merbok has been fenced off by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall. This field is like Dataran Merdeka – an open place for people to gather and relax.”

“This is an incorrect message when all structural fences remain up and there are only 3 doors installed. I want this fence to be lowered so that it is easier for the people to access (the field),” she added.

“Do not fence up an open area like Padang Merbok in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. There is no more gathering points near Parliament. Let the people access this place freely.”

Malaysians agree with the 2 MPs

Netizens have since also shared their agreement with the 2 MPs.

“Fencing Padang Merbok up is laughable.”

How can they do this to the rakyat! Too much is too much,” said a user.
