Can we handle another wave?
In his live press conference yesterday, Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, gave a grave announcement that Malaysia is at risk of a fourth wave based on the risk assessment done by the Ministry of Health over the past 14 days, as reported by BERNAMA.
He said that the Covid-19 cases in most states are presently not stable and the infectivity rate (R0) is going past one.
Kelantan and Sarawak have been showing an increasing trend of infections while the number of cases in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, and Labuan is fluctuating. Despite Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Terengganu, and Sabah showing a decrease in infection rate, there are still many red zones in these states especially Selangor, said the minister during the press conference.
Yesterday, 1,317 positive Covid-19 cases were recorded with four deaths. The fluctuating number of cases is what lead to the Defence Ministry deciding to extend the Conditional Movement Control Order in Selangor, KL, Kelantan, Johor, Penang, and Sarawak.
While the rest of the states are under the Recovery Movement Control Order, interstate travel is still not allowed unless it is conducted for tourism purposes.
