Steven Sim, the MP for Bukit Mertajam has been making headlines these days for helping a food delivery rider. But that’s not the only person he’s known to extend help to.
In a post, Joshua Woo, who was Steven Sim’s special officer shared a story of a student that they helped five years ago.
“I was having lunch at a food court when someone approached me. I couldn’t recognise him. He told me he was Zhan Ye. I tried hard but couldn’t recall, so I apologised to him.”
The man then told Joshua that he was a student Joshua and Steven had helped five years ago. At that time, Zhan Ye had just scored straight A’s for his STPM but he was not offered the course that he wanted. That year, there were only 335 students who had gotten straight A’s and Zhan Ye was one of them.
Zhan Ye aimed to be a chartered accountant so he worked very hard on his studies. The high achiever applied to public local universities to study accountancy but he was not offered the course he wanted. Zhan Ye did not come from a wealthy family so studying overseas or in private colleges was not an option.
Dejected, he looked to Steven Sim for help. The MP checked with the Federal Government to no avail. He then suggested for Zhan Ye to apply for a scholarship (Penang Future Foundation) by the Penang State Government. With his excellent results, Zhan Ye got the scholarship and was able to pursue the accounting course he wanted.
“I asked him if he had a name card so that we can keep in touch. He passed it to me.”
“He is now an associate at one of the biggest accounting & consultancy firms in the world.”
“5 years ago, we were just helping a student.”
