If an ambulance carrying a patient needs to pass through traffic, drivers on the road would usually make way for it. But whose fault is it if an accident takes place?
In a video circulating on social media, an ambulance crashed into a Proton Wira after beating a red light at an intersection. It is uncertain where the incident happened, but Kosmo! reported that it may have happened in Sungai Siput, Perak.
Dashcam footage from another vehicle shows a relatively empty road. As the car approaches a traffic light intersection, a Proton Wira from the opposite direction can be seen turning into the intersection.
At the same time, an ambulance pays no regard to the red light or the approaching Wira, and speeds right through the intersection. The ambulance then crashes into the Wira, causing it to spin from the impact.
The ambulance almost crashes into the sidewalk area, but manages to swerve back onto the road and come to a halt.
The video has caused a debate among netizens as to whose fault it was.
Most netizens say it was the ambulance’s fault as it had run a red light.
- “Following the law, the ambulance is wrong because it violated the red traffic light. Ambulance drivers are also subject to traffic light laws.”
- It’s the ambulance’s fault. When it was driving on the road, there wasn’t any emergency and there was no siren. Only when there was a red traffic light, the siren turned on as if there was an emergency.”
- “In my experience as an ambulance driver, I will stop for a few seconds at a every traffic light so that other drivers see our whereabouts and hear the sound of a siren or horn. I will look at every junction before continuing the journey.”
However, one netizen said that the light turned green right after the crash took place, which could mean that the Proton Wira had driven through a yellow light.
